What to consider when hiring a reputable fire and water damage restoration company
12/28/2022 (Permalink)
Blog Summary: SERVPRO® of Coppell and West Addison, a premier fire and water damage restoration company in the Dallas, Texas, area goes over several important factors to look for in a restoration company to choose a reliable team for restoration services after fire or water damage.
Assessing property damage after fire or water damage is stressful, as is choosing a reliable and cost-effective fire and water damage restoration company. The team at SERVPRO of Coppell and West Addison breaks down exactly what to look for when choosing a fire and water damage restoration company that will get the job done quickly and effectively.
1. Experience
When it comes to hiring a top-tier fire and water damage restoration company, experience is essential. The right company will have years of experience to fix the problem with little disruption to the home or business. For damage after a fire, homeowners should look for a company with fire restoration services. For a leaky pipe, look for a company with water damage restoration and mold remediation services.
The company should also be well known and respected in the community with a history of good reviews.
2. A highly-trained team
A fire and water damage restoration company is only as strong as its individual team members, which is why extensive training is essential. Some crucial training and certifications to look for in a fire and water damage restoration company include the following:
- IICRC training: The Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) certifies and sets standards for the fire and water damage restoration industry. If a company utilizes this training, that's a sign that they're extremely knowledgeable.
- In-depth employee training: In addition to IICRC training, a reputable fire and water damage restoration company should offer thorough training to all its employees and certifications they can earn.
- Continuing education: Responsible fire and water damage restoration companies understand that industry standards can change over time and offer continuing education opportunities to their employees.
SERVPRO keeps up with IICRC standards and holds restoration certifications, including Applied Microbial Remediation Technician, Applied Structural Drying Technician, and Commercial Carpet Maintenance Technician.
3. Exceptional customer service
A reputable fire and water damage restoration company ensures customer satisfaction from start to finish and helps clients through the insurance claims process. Any restoration team should offer comprehensive services and work quickly—typically within minutes of receiving an initial call. The company should have a 24/7 emergency call service to provide restoration services when customers need them most.

Minimizing Fire and Water Damage in the Fall: A Brief Guide
12/7/2022 (Permalink)
Blog Summary: SERVPRO® of Coppell and West Addison, a leader in fire and water damage restoration services, provides a comprehensive guide on ways people can minimize water and fire damage in the fall.
Fire and water damage can severely affect the home and wallet, especially when homeowners don't know where to begin. SERVPRO of Coppell and West Addison advises taking precautions to mitigate these damages and provide affordable fire and water damage restoration services. What can home and business owners do to help?
1. Schedule a roof inspection
A roof inspection assesses the condition and safety of a roof going into the colder months. Trees can cause severe damage in the fall and winter, even more so when their branches are heavy with snow or hail. Some signs of water damage include ceiling stains, roof dips, or lost shingles.
2. Clean out gutters
Fall weather involves heavy rain and chances of snow. Wet leaves, dirt, and other natural debris dangerously clog gutters, leaving no place for water to travel away from the structure. Thoroughly cleaning gutters in the fall can help prevent water damage and flooding in the basements and homes.
3. Clear debris
Wet leaves or summer storm debris can weigh down gutters and your roof, leading to damage and problems like mold, rot, or water damage. One of the greatest dangers of water damage is the destruction of a roof's structure and the support of the home.
4. Keep fireplaces safe
Cleaning the chimney and fireplace is necessary for fall home maintenance and ensures it is ready for winter use. Soot buildup can start a deadly fire, but cleaning it keeps everyone safe. Homeowners can schedule chimney and fireplace inspections to resolve issues and tackle repairs.
To keep fireplaces safe, follow these steps:
- Never leave fires unattended.
- Only burn small fires and avoid overloading the fireplace with wood.
- Use a glass door, guard, or fireplace screen as a safety barrier.
5. Check fire extinguishers & replace smoke alarm batteries
Some people never use their smoke alarms or fire extinguishers but should have them prepared in case a fire happens. When a home is on fire, everyone inside needs to know immediately, and smoke alarms with old batteries can fail to alert. Fire extinguishers are beneficial in the case of smaller fires, so everyone in a home should learn where they are and how to use them.
6. Winterize hoses & sprinkler systems
Detaching hoses from the hose bib prevents the line from freezing and potentially bursting from expanded ice. Winterizing sprinkler systems is also critical to hinder a damaging rupture that harms the home's structure and causes basement flooding.

Five Common Fire Hazards and Tips to Avoid Fire Damage
10/20/2022 (Permalink)
Blog Summary: SERVPRO® of Coppell and West Addison, North Dallas’s leading fire, storm, and water damage restoration company, details five of the most common fire hazards and advises readers on how to avoid fire damage.
Fire hazards at home and in the workplace increase the risk of fires or worsen fire damage. During a fire, fire hazards prevent firefighting equipment from functioning correctly and prevent individuals from getting out safely. Fire hazards include any materials that obstruct fire safety tactics.
Fire Hazards come in many shapes and sizes, ranging from unmonitored candles to building materials susceptible to fire damage.
Managing fire damage without a fire restoration company can be challenging, depending on the indoor environment’s fire risk level. Risk increases as more hazards exist in one location. Some threats may only pose a high fire damage risk in certain conditions.
Five common fire hazards
It’s crucial to be aware of the many potential fire hazards in a home or business. The following are some of the most common residential and commercial fire damage sources.
- Worn electrical wiring: Damage to electrical cables and cords from prolonged use, rodent chewing, and other wear and tear issues can result in severe fire damage. Sparking wires may quickly ignite hazardous materials on the floor and walls.
- Malfunctioning equipment or appliances: Between coffee makers, HVAC systems, and electrical machinery, there are many opportunities for fires to develop when these items become faulty. Worn-out appliance cords may spark when plugged into electrical outlets. In some cases, electrical sparks from damaged circuit boards may start the instantaneous combustion of flammable materials in and around these appliances. Always have the home and workplace appliances checked by professionals to prevent fire damage.
- Unattended lit cigarettes: Falling asleep with a lit cigarette or not putting a cigarette out after a work break can lead to significant fire damage. According to the findings of the National Fire Protection Association, in 2016, an estimated 16,500 house structure fires were caused by smoking materials such as cigarettes, pipes, and cigars, as reported to U.S. fire agencies.
- Open flames: Unattended flames, such as those on candles and gas stoves, are common fire hazards that can start a house fire. Accidental knocking or leaving a burning candle unattended has been reported to cause a fire in residences, while NFPA further reports that in 2020 alone, nearly 49% of home fires in the US have originated from the kitchen involving cooking equipment.
- Flammable chemicals: Flammable chemicals in factories and other industrial applications can cause significant, toxic fires. Chemical accelerants in the area may worsen fire damage upon exposure. In home fires reported to fire departments, chemical fires often happen after chemical reactions in the garage and storage spaces. It is always essential to read and follow storage instructions on the label of fire hazard chemicals used at home and workplaces.
How to avoid fire damage
Avoiding fire damage in the home and workplace is vital. Businesses should follow Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards regarding fire hazards to suppress fires quickly. Employees must pay careful attention to chemical and accelerant labels to understand the fire damage risk.
In the home, it’s best to monitor open flames and keep fire hazards out of reach of children or pets. It’s also essential to maintain damaged electrical wiring, appliances, and other fire damage risks. Ensuring the fireplace and cigarette ashes are completely cool before putting them in the trash is another best practice to adopt.
If a fire occurs in a home or business, get fire restoration services immediately to prevent extensive damage and reduce the harmful effects of smoke. Professionals can help.

7/26/2022 (Permalink)
Blog Summary: Team Shaw, the group of restoration professionals from SERVPRO of Coppell and West Addison, helps property owners to prepare for fire damage restoration by highlighting what to expect during the process.
Fire Damage Restoration Process
Fire causes devastating damage to structures, landscapes, and soil. For residential and commercial property owners, these losses are just the beginning. After a fire, property restoration takes time, effort, and financial investment.
Fortunately, property owners don’t need to handle restoration alone. At SERVPRO of Coppell and West Addison, Team Shaw can help property owners to rebuild after severe property damage.
In this blog, Team Shaw discusses the fire restoration process and steps you should take after your property becomes damaged by fire.
Steps to Take After Fire Damage
Prioritize Safety
When your property becomes damaged, make safety your priority. After recent fires, avoid breathing smoke or touching fire-damaged materials. Do not enter buildings or other fire-damaged structures.
Always allow safety officials to clear your property before approaching or inspecting the damage.
Call Your Insurance Company
In the days after a fire damages your home or business, you must contact your insurance company. The sooner you contact these officials, the more accurately your assigned representative can document the damages.
Claims adjusters may inspect your property with the aid of a professional restoration service. Going forward, remember that your insurance may only cover a limited amount of your property’s restoration needs. Still, it’s crucial that your provider conducts an investigation to secure what coverage you can get.
Get Restoration Estimates
While an insurance company may choose a restoration service to provide estimates, property owners may still choose which companies they prefer to hire.
Get quotes from two or more professional restoration services before committing. Choose a company you trust that will work with your goals and budget to make the restoration process as stress-free as possible.
Choose a Restoration Company
Once you receive a fair quote, sign your service contract. If needed, contact your insurance representatives with the necessary coverage information.
From this point forward, let fire damage restoration experts take the lead. We’ll follow your direction throughout the project to safely and efficiently return your property to working order.
What Fire Damage Restoration Companies Do
If you’re facing property restoration after fire damage, you probably have concerns about the restoration process. All restoration services aim to return your residential or commercial property to a habitable and safe state.
Depending on the extent of the fire damage, restoration projects can take anywhere from several weeks to several months. Restoration technicians like Team Shaw work diligently to mitigate hazards and rebuild your property. Services vary by project but may include:

4 Important Facts About Fire Damage Restoration
6/29/2022 (Permalink)
Blog Summary: Fire damage leaves behind charred walls, flooded basements, and damaged furniture, carpets, and more. Homeowners often don’t know where to turn first when they face the aftermath of a fire. SERVPRO of Coppell and West Addison explains how fire damage restoration works.
Facts About Fire Damage Restoration
The fire damage restoration experts at SERVPRO of Coppell and West Addison want to make sure that members of the community understand the full cost of fire damage. Fire damage restoration helps families heal from home and property damage so they can return to their lives. Here are four facts about fire damage restoration homeowners might not know.
Fact #1: Fire Damage Often Means Water Damage
The fire is often just the first stage of property damage. Fire crews responding to a call use large quantities of water to extinguish fires. Water from fire hoses damages drywall, furniture, carpets, hardwood floors, and more.
Lingering moisture allows mold to grow and spread, which can cause breathing difficulties and reduce indoor air quality. Professional fire damage restoration can include water damage restoration and mold remediation services.
Don’t let mold damage add thousands of dollars to restoration costs. Treat water damage as soon as possible after a fire.
Fact #2: Smoke is a Source of Lingering Damage
Smoke from fires is a life-threatening danger. After the fires die down and the air clears, smoke damage remains. Clothing, fabrics, and other porous materials in the home retain the stains and odors from smoke.
Comprehensive fire damage restoration includes removing and replacing any materials that are the source of smoke odors, repainting or repairing surfaces that have stains, and taking steps to neutralize smoke odors and restore air quality.
Fact #3: Fire Restoration Might Save Some, But Not All, of a Homeowner’s Belongings
Sadly, homeowners often have to accept the loss of items that suffer irreparable damage in a fire. An expert in water damage restoration will know how to assess the damage to each piece of property.
SERVPRO of Coppell and West Addison values homeowners’ belongings and makes every effort to save everything possible. The team works with homeowners and insurance companies to process claims quickly.
Fact #4: The Mental and Psychological Toll Might Be Greater than the Physical Damage
The physical reminders of fire damage, especially the smell of smoke or musty odors and stains on walls, bring those feelings to the surface. Children and pets suffer anxiety after a fire, even if they cannot communicate their feelings. Fire damage restoration gives families a chance to make life closer to the way it was before the fire.

Professional Fire Damage Cleanup Company Reviews Steps to Take Before the Fire Restoration Process
5/13/2022 (Permalink)
Blog Summary: The professionals at SERVPRO of Coppell and West Addison explain the steps leading up to fire damage cleanup and handling restoration after a commercial or residential fire.
4 Things to Consider Before Fire Damage Cleanup
Fires cause an immense amount of damage to commercial and residential properties. Fortunately, fire damage cleanup allows property owners to get their properties back into excellent condition, moving forward.
Reviewing information about fire restoration helps property owners feel more confident about the process. Find out what to expect and the steps to take before cleanup crews arrive with the experts at SERVPRO of Coppell and West Addison.
#1: Find the Right Property Restoration Company
Most property owners decide not to handle fire damage restoration on their own. The cleanup process requires specialized equipment and training to handle correctly. Therefore, experts generally recommend that homeowners work with a professional damage restoration company.
A reputable team can take care of:
- Smoke, ash, and soot removal
- Repairs for structural and aesthetic damages
- Water damage restoration
While it may seem counterintuitive to look for help with water damage after a fire, the reality is that fires often result in damage from sprinkler systems and water hoses. Selecting a company with water restoration experience makes the cleanup process less complicated.
#2: Contact the Insurance Company
Before anyone begins commercial cleaning following a fire, the experts recommend reaching out to the insurance company. First, insurance agents need to know about any property damage, including smoke or fire damage. Then, once the company knows about the damage, they provide information about compensation and reimbursement for repair costs.
In order to get full coverage for any losses, property owners generally need to provide proof regarding the damage caused by the fire. For example, the company may ask for pictures of the property before repairs begin and an itemized list of property damaged by the flames.
#3: Look for Alternative Housing
Generally, homeowners cannot stay in their homes after a fire. Fire and smoke cause extensive damage and negatively impact the home’s indoor air quality. In addition, staying inside exposes individuals to dangerous chemicals and contaminants that lead to short-term symptoms.
Long-term exposure to the chemicals can result in more severe conditions, especially if the damaged property contains asbestos. Therefore, most property owners need to find a new place to stay until the cleanup process ends.
#4: Secure the Property After Any Form of Damage
Part of both fire and storm damage restoration involves securing a property to ensure that it does not sustain further damage. Often, this requires a company to perform boarding-up services. Technicians hammer boards over missing doors and windows or cover damaged portions of the roof with a tarp.
Board-up service helps prevent the elements from causing additional damage to a property before fire damage cleanup can begin. It also keeps other people from entering the property.
Property owners can get around-the-clock emergency help with fire restoration by reaching out to the team at SERVPRO in Coppell, TX. Crews have years of experience and training, allowing them to help with the removal of smoke, ash, soot, and more. They have the equipment to take care of even the toughest cleanup jobs.

Fire Damage Restoration Company Explains How Fire Damage Affects Property
3/28/2022 (Permalink)
Blog Summary: SERVPRO of Coppell and West Addison discuss how heat and smoke can cause warping, staining, and odor to personal property. Fire damage restoration restores homes and protects homeowners from health risks after a fire.
How Fire Damage Affects Homes and How Restoration Services Can Help
Not all property damage comes from direct contact with fire. The professional fire restoration specialists at SERVPRO of Coppell and West Addison explain other sources of damage resulting from fire. They specialize in all forms of restoration, including water damage restoration and storm damage restoration.
Lingering Effects of Fire Damage
Early handling of fire damage means a greater chance of success in salvaging personal property. Permanent damage such as rust and corrosion could result if damage remediation doesn’t happen quickly. A fire can affect property in three additional ways.
Melting and Warping
Fire creates intense heat. In the enclosed indoor areas of a home, heat radiates quickly into adjoining spaces. Plastic, metal, or glass furniture and belongings can melt and warp with prolonged exposure to this heat.
Soot and Discoloration
After a fire, painted metal, wood, photographs, and documents can tarnish and discolor. This tarnishing results from soot particles spreading through the air and ventilation systems before settling into cracks and surface pores.
Lingering smoke damage and soot also cause poor air quality and health effects.
Smoke Odors
A smokey smell also settles into cracks and surfaces. Because soot can travel easily through air and ventilation and cling to other items in the home, the smell of smoke can spread quickly and linger until wiped clean with soap and water.
Personal property made of fabric is highly susceptible to lingering odor after a fire. Scrubbing clean or running the materials through the washing machine may reduce odors, but professional fire restoration is the best way to ensure a safe, nontoxic home free of smoke.
Commercial Cleaning and Restoration Services
It is essential to look at specific factors for fire damage restoration.
Type and Extent of Damage
Smoke odor and slight discoloration may be easy to resolve, making certain items salvageable after fire damage restoration. No matter how minor, melting and warping of personal property is permanent and will require discarding altogether.
Cost
Complete restoration is not always possible. Although homeowners may be reluctant to throw out damaged belongings, it is essential to evaluate the restoration cost before deciding to keep an item. Sometimes, restoration costs more than replacing the item with a new one.
The Right Equipment for the Job
Cleaning complex personal property or large structures within the home requires specialty equipment. Although equipment might be available to rent, knowing how much is needed and operating directions are essential.
Similar to water damage restoration, it is incredibly beneficial to consult with professionals when beginning fire restoration. Even if they do not perform the work, they can explain what items are salvageable, what isn’t, and what to look at when making that determination.
Fire damage restoration professionals use industry-leading equipment, have proper cleaning agents, and have years of experience restoring homes after fires.

Debunking Four Myths about Fire and Fire Damage Restoration
12/15/2021 (Permalink)
Blog Summary: SERVPRO of Coppell and West Addison debunks four common myths about fire and fire damage restoration.
Debunking 4 Common Myths with Fire and Fire Damage Restoration
Few things destroy a home faster than fire. Although fire is warm and cozy when contained in a small campfire or fireplace, it causes immense damage when it spirals out of control. That’s why it’s vital to separate fact from fiction in case disaster strikes.
Believe it or not, there are many myths regarding fire and the damage it causes. Luckily, the fire damage restoration experts at SERVPRO of Coppell and West Addison debunked a few common myths to protect homeowners during a fire. Below are four debunked fire and fire damage restoration myths that every homeowner should know.
1. Myth: Flames Are the Most Destructive Part of a Fire
Although flames do immense damage to a home’s structure, they aren’t the most destructive part of the fire. The smoke poses even more of a threat to the residence and puts occupants at extreme risk. Toxic chemicals flourish in smoke, causing severe damage to the building and the resident’s health.
If a home catches fire, the homeowner must exit the residence immediately before the smoke overwhelms the interior. Smoke kills more people than fire, so avoid inhaling it as much as possible while escaping.
2. Myth: Smoke Detectors Are Enough
Smoke detectors alert homeowners of potential fires before they engulf their homes. Although they are viable tools, they don’t provide enough protection against raging fires.
Having one or two fire extinguishers available or installing a sprinkler system gives residents an extra layer of protection from fires. However, homeowners shouldn’t try to combat the fire themselves. Only use the fire extinguishers to resolve smaller, less-lethal fires or make a safe pathway exiting the home.
3. Myth: Sprinklers Cause More Damage Than Fires
Although water can severely damage your home and may demand a water damage restoration expert to resolve, fires cause much more harm to the residence. Sprinklers only activate when they detect a fire close by and extinguish flames before spreading to additional rooms. Sprinklers in non-affected rooms won’t trigger, meaning water damage only occurs in rooms set ablaze.
It’s better (and cheaper) to deal with water damage in a single room than to have the fire spread throughout the house. You also won’t have to spend as much on fire restoration if the fire only engulfs one room.
4. Myth: Electrical Malfunctions Cause Most Fires
Although an electrical malfunction can cause a fire, it isn’t the main culprit like many people believe. In fact, electrical malfunctions only caused 6.5% of home fires in 2016. Cooking and heating equipment generates far more fires than electrical issues, so keep that in mind when installing fire retardant equipment around the home.

Six Tips for Recovering After Fire Disaster Damage in Your Home
11/1/2021 (Permalink)
Blog Summary: SERVPRO of Copple and West Addison has six valuable fire damage restoration tips for recovering after a fire disaster.
Six Tips for Recovering After Fire Disaster Damage in Your Home
A home fire disaster is an unfortunate event that can cause months of frustration and confusion. SERVPRO aims to help fire damage victims by providing professional and friendly fire damage restoration in Coppell and West Addison, TX.
The SERVPRO team knows the keys to an effective fire and water damage restoration process. While waiting for the residential or commercial cleaning team to arrive, follow these tips to start the recovery process after a fire disaster.
Contact the Insurance Agent
After calling for emergency services and ensuring that everyone is safe, the next call should be the insurance agent. The insurance policy exists to protect assets in case of ruinous incidents.
Talk with the insurance agent about everything that the policy covers. For example, some homeowners' insurance policies will cover the costs for a temporary residence while the fire restoration company works on home repairs. Be sure to tell the agent everything regarding damages and the recovery plan.
2. Gather All of the Necessary Documents
Insurance companies require extensive paperwork to make sure the payout is accurate. Make a list of everything the fire has destroyed so that the insurance company can account for everything.
When the fire or storm damage restoration company comes, be sure to ask for a detailed receipt. Keeping track of recovery costs and services used will be an essential factor in the insurance payout. If the fire causes flooding, keep the documents from the water damage restoration company as well.
Most importantly, be sure to get a copy of the fire report, as this is one of the most important documents to submit in an insurance claim. Thankfully, fire reports are public and easily accessible.
3. Secure the Home While You are Away
Unfortunately, crime doesn't stop just because of a house fire. If the home's damage creates unsafe living conditions, the fire damage restoration company will ask that you find somewhere else to live during the restoration process. During this time, it is crucial to secure the home to prevent burglary or vandalism.
Board up the windows and notify the local police department to keep the house safe during the fire restoration process.
4. Replace Any Valuable Documents
House fires may destroy documents such as birth certificates, social security cards, military records, or other personal information. In that case, it is critical to replace them as soon as possible.
Fire damage victims can take the remains of burnt cash to a Federal Reserve Bank to replace the lost amount.
5. Remove Any Undamaged or Salvageable Property
A commercial cleaning team's first step during a fire or storm damage restoration is cleaning out the house. Once the house is officially safe to re-enter, gather and remove any undamaged or salvageable belongings. Remember to check these items for soot and wash any clothes that make it out.
6. Contact a Fire Damage Restoration Company
Once everyone is safe and the insurance claims process starts, it's time to reach out to a fire damage restoration company. Starting the fire restoration process as soon as possible will restore the home's living conditions sooner and get life back on track.

Cleaning windows affected by a fire involves the entire framework and any hardware, not just the glass. Drapery, pictures, and other wall-mounted contents also involve different cleaning methods, especially on items made of different materials, including wood, metal, or plastic.
A kitchen fire could result in fire damage to your attic. Raw structural timbers exposed to water or fire damage may need replacement, rather than restoration, due to the costs involved. This also includes insulation damaged during a fire. In almost every situation, it is most cost effective to replace insulation rather than attempt restoration.
Call SERVPRO of Coppell and West Addison for all your fire damage restoration needs (972) 233-8400.

Clean your Chimney to Prevent Fire Damage
10/12/2021 (Permalink)
Burning fires in a chimney will lead to accumulation of soot and creosote, a flammable, sticky substance that can cause chimney fires if it is not removed. If you use your fireplace frequently, using a professional chimney sweep can be expensive. You may want to consider picking up a few tools from the hardware store and cleaning your chimney yourself.
Utilize the following tips to safely clean your chimney and assist with fire prevention.
- Determine whether the chimney cleaning is needed (Frequently used fireplaces and chimneys should be inspected and cleaned once a year, at minimum.) This is best accomplished in the fall before the burning season begins. Otherwise, you risk sparking a chimney fire the first time you light up your fireplace in the winter.
- Check the chimney for animals and nests. Shine a flashlight up the chimney from the fireplace, and if you find an animal remove it or have it removed by a professional.
- Measure your chimney flue. You have to have properly sized tools to clean the chimney properly.
- Buy chimney cleaning supplies such as a wire brush, rope, plastic tarp or drop cloth, broom, dustpan, mask, goggles and ladder.
- Dress appropriately. Wear old clothes that you don’t mind getting messy with soot. Cover your hair and make sure you wear safety stems such as a mask and goggles.
- Prepare your house for the cleaning. Drape a drop cloth around the fireplace and move back furniture and rugs.
- Remove the damper from the chimney flue
- Start the cleaning process
In the event your home is affected by a fire, SERVPRO of Coppell and West Addison is here to help with all your fire restoration needs. Contact us by phone at (972) 233-8400.
How to Prevent a House Fire
3/25/2021 (Permalink)
Call SERVPRO of Metrocrest to help with your fire restoration needs (972) 233-8400.
It’s important to have a fire escape plan that the entire family understands, in case of an emergency. Home fires can be very dangerous and there are several things you can do to prevent them:
Do not ever leave heat sources like candles, stoves, and space heaters unattended. **Also, don’t leave them on overnight or while you sleep.**
If you are going to smoke, try to smoke outside. If you are indoors, do not leave smoking materials where children can access them and fully extinguish your cigarette or cigar before throwing it away.
Make sure your smoke detectors work. Replace the batteries every year to keep them in top condition.
If your home suffers from a fire, call the company that cares, call SERVPRO of Metrocrest (972) 233-8400.

Did you know Fire Prevention Week is October 4-10, 2020? With more remote learning going on at home and more people staying in during the Pandemic, it is important to follow these fire safety tips:
*Leaving devices charging overnight while placed under your pillow, on your bed, or under papers can cause a fire. Smartphones should be charged in a location that allows for adequate ventilation, so they do not overheat.
*It is best to charge your phone in the daytime when you can monitor it.
*Buy and use devices that are listed by a qualified testing laboratory.
*Make sure with all electronics you are following all manufacturer’s instruction.
*Only use the battery and charging cords that are designed for your specific device.
*Never leave food unattended on the stove or in the oven.
*Keep towels and paper products away from a stove.
*Always keep a lid nearby when cooking, if a small grease fire starts you can quickly slide the lid over the pan and turn off the burner.

SERVPRO of Metrocrest will make the fire damage to your home seem “Like it never even happened."
3/24/2020 (Permalink)
If your home suffers a fire loss, please call SERVPRO of Metrocrest (972) 233-8400.
The fire is put out, now what? After you have called 911 and the firefighters have come put out the fire in your home, while the immediate danger has passed, the fire will continue to damage the home if professionals of SERVPRO of Metrocrest are not called in.
If ash and smoke is left unhindered it will cause extensive corrosion, etching and discoloration, not to mention lingering odors. According to the IICRC (Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification), it takes just minutes after a fire for soot residue to settle onto the property. Discoloration of porous materials is permanent but other surfaces can be cleaned to remove the damage. Within hours all surfaces begin to suffer from fire and smoke damage. Wooden furniture may require refinishing, metals begins to rust and corrode, and painted walls begin to yellow. In addition, some clothing can be permanently stained, and your flooring could end up requiring you to refinish or replace it. If left untreated, within weeks the restoration process will take longer and cost you more. The prolonged soot exposure can ruin some of your belongings and is also not good for you and your family’s health.
SERVPRO of Metrocrest is here to help you with all of your fire damage needs. Our trained technicians are available 24/7 and have the cleaning and restoration experience to quickly restore your home to pre-fire condition.

Time to clean your fire chimney
12/11/2019 (Permalink)
Call SERVPRO of Metrocrest for all your fire restoration needs. (972) 233-8400.
Burning fires in a chimney leads to the accumulation of soot and creosote, a flammable, sticky substance that can cause chimney fires if it’s not removed. Hiring a professional chimney sweep can get expensive, so if you use your fireplace frequently, consider picking up a few tools from the hardware store and cleaning your chimney yourself. This article provides instructions on three different methods for cleaning a chimney, as well as tips on chimney cleaning safely.
- Determine whether the chimney needs to be cleaned (if you only clean your chimney once a year, do it in the fall before the burning season begins. Otherwise, you risk sparking a chimney fire the first time you light up your fireplace in the winter.
- Check the chimney for animals. Shine a flashlight up the chimney from the fireplace, and if you find an animal remove it.
- Measure your chimney flue. You have to have properly sized tools to clean the chimney properly.
- Buy chimney cleaning supplies such as a wire brush, rope, plastic tarp or drop cloth, broom, dustpan, mask, goggles and ladder.
- Dress in appropriate clothing. You should wear old clothes that you don’t mind getting messy with soot. Cover your hair and make sure you wear a mask and googles.
- Prepare your house for the cleaning. Drape a drop cloth around the fireplace and move back furniture and rugs.
- Remove the damper from the chimney flue
- Start the cleaning process

When SERVPRO of Metrocrest begins cleaning windows affected by the fire, it involves the entire framework and any hardware, not just the glass. Drapery, pictures, and other wall-mounted contents also involve different cleaning methods, especially on items made of different materials, including wood, metal, or plastic.
A fire that started in your kitchen may end up in your attic. Any raw structural timber exposed to water or fire damage might need replacement, rather than restoration, due to the costs involved. Same goes for any insulation damaged during a fire; in almost every situation, it is far less expensive to replace insulation than it is to attempt restoration.
Call SERVPRO of Metrocrest for all your fire damage restoration needs (972) 233-8400.

October is Fire Prevention Month! Do You Have A Plan?
10/1/2019 (Permalink)
A home in Irving, Texas that suffered a fire damage
- In 2014, fires caused 2,745 deaths, 11,825 injuries, and $6.8 billion in property damage.
- Three out of five house fire deaths happen in homes with no or non-working smoke alarms.
- Working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in half in reported home fires.
- In fires large enough to activate the smoke alarm, hardwired alarms operated 94% of the time, while battery powered alarms operated 80% of the time.
- When smoke alarms fail to operate, it is usually because batteries are missing, disconnected, or dead.
- One quarter of house fire deaths start in the bedroom. Another quarter start in the living room, family room or den.
- One third of surveyed respondents thought they would have at least 6 minutes before a fire in their home would become life-threatening. The time is often much less. Only 8% said their first thought on hearing a smoke alarm would be to get out.
CAN YOU EXIT IN UNDER 2 MINUTES?
Fire experts agree, people have as little as 2 minutes to escape a burning home before it's too late to get out. Increase your chance of surviving by ensuring you have working smoke detectors in place, building an escape plan, and then practicing the plan. The following are a few suggestions to help you develop an emergency escape plan.
- Draw a mapof each level of your home and show all doors and windows. Find two ways to get out of each room. Make sure all doors and windows that lead outside open easily.
- Consider escape laddersfor sleeping areas on the 2nd and 3rd floors. Store them near the window where they will be used.
- Choose an outside meeting placea safe distance in front of your house. Make sure to make the location of the meeting place on your escape plan.
- Teach childrenhow to escape on their own in case you cannot help them. Plan for everyone in your home with special considerations for elderly or disabled individuals.
- Practice your fire escape planduring the day and nighttime.
Escape Planning for Your Business
Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recommends building an emergency action plan to protect yourself, your employees, and your business during an emergency. OSHA suggests the following steps when developing such a plan:
- Organize an Emergency Preparedness Procedures review with employees to go over your company's emergency plan.
- Once a plan is developed, post evacuation procedures, including routes and exits where they are easily accessible to all employees. Ensure all exits and routes are clearly marked and well lit, wide enough to accommodate the number of evacuating personnel, and unobstructed and clear of debris always.
- Conduct office evacuation exercises and drills. Designate a safe spot outside of the facility where employees can regroup, recover and conduct a headcount.
If your home or office suffers from a fire, call the professionals of SERVPRO of Metrocrest (972) 233-8400.
Fire Damage Restoration Tips
9/11/2019 (Permalink)
If you have fire damage in your home or business, it's essential to call in fire damage professionals. They know exactly what to do to properly address fire loss, soot damage, smoke damage and serious issues like air quality degradation. Plus, it's important to act quickly. Sometimes the water used to put out fire in home or fire in business or to limit commercial fire damage can become a breeding ground for mold. This can lead to dangerous health problems. That's why it's essential to call in a licensed fire damage restoration company as soon as possible after there's a fire in home or a fire in business.
Once the fire in your home or business is out and you're sure everyone is safe, you should contact your insurance company. They can provide guidance on what steps to take to get your fire loss, soot damage and smoke damage addressed. Whether you had a fire in home, fire in business or suffered commercial fire damage, following the proper fire cleanup process is essential. Your insurance company can suggest several licensed, experienced, reputable fire cleanup companies, like SERVPRO of Metrocrest, to begin taking care of any fire damage, smoke damage or soot damage you may have. They will also test the air quality and let you know when it's safe to return.
When you have a fire in home, fire in business or commercial fire damage, it's essential to deal with licensed, experienced fire cleanup companies, such as SERVPRO of Metrocrest. They have the necessary tools, equipment and specially trained personnel to quickly and effectively assess and repair fire damage, smoke damage, soot damage, commercial fire damage and air quality issues. Many insurance companies will not cover the cost of fire cleanup if it's not handled by a licensed, certified fire damage cleanup company. Repairing commercial fire damage or damage caused by fire in home or fire in business can leave people in financial ruin if the insurance company does not cover those costs.
If it is not handled properly, even a seemingly minor fire in home or fire in business can be an unmitigated disaster. The fire damage, smoke damage and soot damage can lead to air quality issues or more costly repairs if not handled quickly and properly. The smell of smoke can permeate walls and furnishings and end up requiring extensive and expensive work to address it. Your fire loss can end up being a lot greater than necessary if the fire cleanup is not done right. Many unscrupulous people attempt to prey on home or business owners that have suffered a fire loss. Make sure you are not one of them. Only deal with licensed, reputable fire loss companies like SERVPRO of Metrocrest.
The decisions you make in the hours immediately after you suffer a fire loss will decide how well and how soon the repairs will be made, the air quality in the structure will be safe enough for you to return and how much of your repair and restoration costs your insurance company will cover. Fireworks safety tips for 4th of July
According to the National Fire Protection Association, more fires are reported on July 4 than any other day throughout the calendar year. Each year fireworks are responsible on average for over 1,300 structural fires, 300 vehicle fires and more than 17,000 miscellaneous fires that cause personal injuries.
The National Safety Council recommends that fireworks be left to the professionals and advises everyone to stay away from consumer-packaged fireworks and to enjoy the celebrations of your local towns and municipalities.

- Never allow young children to handle fireworks
- Older children should use them only under close adult supervision

- Never use fireworks while impaired by drugs or alcohol
- Never light them indoors
- Only use them away from people, houses and flammable material

Grilling Tips

Spring is in full swing! It’s time to get outside and enjoy those grills that have been unused all winter. Barbeques are fun but it is important to keep your home, family, and guests safe. Every year, about 5,700 grill fires take place due to malfunctioning gas grills, according to the U.S. Fire Administration. These grill fires equal up to an annual average of $37 million in damage, along with 100 injuries and 10 deaths. Don’t let one little mistake ruin your barbeque fun! Follow these tips provided by the National Fire Protection Association to make sure you are safe when grilling.
General grilling tips
- Propane and charcoal grills should only be used outdoors.
- Grills should be located well away from the home (at least 10 feet), deck railings, and out from carports and overhanging branches.
- Keep children and pets away from the grilling area.
- Keep your grill clean by getting rid of any grease of fat buildup in the trays below the grill.
- Never leave your grill unattended.
Before using your grill
- Check the major connection points between the gas tank hose and the regulator and cylinder, along with where the hose connects to the burners. If any are loose, tighten them.
- Check the propane tank hose for any potential gas leaks. To do that:
- Apply a light soap and water solution to the hose using a brush or spray bottle.
- Turn on the propane tank. If there is a gas leak, the propane will start to release bubbles around the hose.
- If you don’t see any bubbles, your grill is safe to use.
- If there are bubbles being released around the hose, turn off the tank and check the connections. You then should have your grill serviced by a professional before using it again.
- If the leak doesn’t seem to be stopping, call the fire department immediately!
When your grill is on
- If you are cooking and start to smell gas, turn off the gas tank and burners.
- If the leak immediately stops, make sure to get the grill serviced by a professional before using it again.
- If the smell doesn’t seem to be going away, move away from the grill and call the fire department immediately. Do not move the grill.

Knowing how to use a fire extinguisher can help minimize the potential damage from a fire.
There are many scenarios people in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area can find themselves in where there is a need for a fire extinguisher in their home. No matter what the source of a fire in a house is, knowing how to use this device is an essential part of understanding and implementing fire safety and preventing fire damage.
How To Remember Directions for Use
The first thing to remember before trying to put out a fire in the home is to call the fire department. Once the fire department is made aware, a fire extinguisher can be used to attempt to control and eliminate a fire. An easy way to remember how to use an extinguisher is the acronym PASS.
• P – P is for Pull. Pull the pin at the top of the extinguisher. This allows the handle to be squeezed, and also breaks the seal so the extinguisher can work.
• A – A stands for Aim. It is important to remember to aim low toward the bottom of the fire.
• S – The first S in the acronym is for Squeeze. Squeeze the handle, or the trigger.
• S – The second S is for Sweep. Sweep the nozzle from side to side across the bottom of the fire until it is extinguished. If the fire does not go out, or if it starts back up again, then repeat step two through step four.
It is extremely important to remember that evacuation is the number one priority if the fire doesn’t seem to be affected by an extinguisher!
Potential Fire Damages
There are many possible sources for fires in a residential area, including kitchen utilities, outlets, candles, wiring, and many others. Preventing fire damage is key during a residential fire, whether it is from a kitchen fire or from any other source in the house.
Knowing how to use a fire extinguisher can help minimize the potential damage from a fire. In situations where damage does occur, call SERVPRO of Metrocrest (972) 233-8400 to help with cleanup and fixing any damage left behind.

Keeping cell phones charged often means plugging charging cables into adapters. This practice and others like it can lead to overheated plugs and eventually cause a fire.
Using properly rated power strips can protect your home from fire damage caused by too many electrical devices plugged into one socket. The rubber or soft plastic electrical cords on many devices give off noxious fumes when burned, which can create very dense soot. The plugs can also contribute to this, as well as melt and cause the carpeting to burn.
SERVPRO of Metrocrest knows how this kind of disaster can affect your family and we are ready to help clean up the damage and make things “Like it never even happened.” The areas above doorways and windows near the fire often contain concentrated levels of smoke residue. We begin working to remove this soon after we arrive. Allowing this substance to remain longer only allows it to adhere more tightly, making it more difficult to clean away. We also clean anything else in your home where smoke residue and soot settled.
After a fire, odor from burned materials and possessions becomes very noticeable. While cleaning soot off surfaces removes a significant amount of this odor, if the fire created enough smoke, the odor left behind might remain because its source hides in areas where our tools cannot reach. Our IICRC-certified Technicians can efficiently handle this predicament. For the toughest odors, we rely on thermal fogging techniques.
SERVPRO of Metrocrest wants to ensure that our customers love living in their homes after a disaster. We have an extensive range of equipment to mitigate any sized disaster, large or small, and have the experience and training needed to provide you with the level of service you deserve.

After you’ve just finished watching emergency service take care of a fire in your home, the shock can sometimes make it difficult to figure out which step you should take next. However, if you want your home to stand the best chance at a full recovery, you’re going to need to make a few calls.
First, call your insurance company. Next, you’ll want to call SERVPRO of Metrocrest, your local fire damage cleanup crew. Doing this early on is imperative because
- Quicker action yields better results
- Mitigation of water damage is easier
- You’ll be able to salvage more of your belongings
Fast Action
When a fire happens, it doesn’t just affect the things it burns. It releases soot and smoke that seeps into materials surrounding the fire as well. Over time, these byproducts set in, discoloring and damaging porous materials. The longer these surfaces go without being properly cleaned, the more likely it is that the damage will be irreversible, which is why calling a fire damage crew right away is so important.
Water Damage
Many people don’t consider water damage to be an issue when there’s a fire, but with gallons and gallons of water coming out of the fire hose pointed at your home, it’s definitely something you’ll need to contend with. SERVPRO of Metrocrest has the tools to dry out carpets, furniture and more, faster.
Salvaging
Salvaging your belongings is not only a way to keep restoration costs down, but it preserves a little peace of mind as well. Choosing a cleanup crew to come in right away can help you make the most of your remaining belongings, so you can reinstall them in your restored home when the job’s done.
SERVPRO of Metrocrest is IICRC certified and trained to handle every challenge your house has to offer. Having them on the job right away means you can get back in your home sooner, so you can get back to the life.

3 Ways to Keep Your Pets Safe in the Event of a Fire
8/30/2018 (Permalink)

During a fire emergency in the Dallas metroplex area, it can be essential that everybody in your home evacuate and meet in a safe location. While you should always be most focused on keeping yourself and your family safe, you can also spend some time on pet preparation so that you can have a better chance of getting your pets out of danger, too.
1. Practice Evacuating
In the confusion caused by a fire, it can be hard to think of everything you need to do right away. If you have a plan in place and practice it a few times, you can be better prepared to handle a fire emergency. This can not only be helpful for pet safety, but also for the safety of everyone in your household.
2. Notice Where Your Pets Are
An important part of the planning process can be noticing where your pets usually spend their time. It can be especially helpful to note where they hide when frightened. You don’t want to put yourself at risk by spending too much time searching for your dog or cat during a fire emergency, but you can be better prepared to get yourself and your pets out as soon as possible by having a checklist of areas you can look.
3. Keep Collars and Leashes Handy
Fires can be especially frightening to pets. By keeping their collars and leashes handy, you can more easily guide them out of the house. If you are unable to find them, it can be easier for the fire department to get them out if they are wearing collars. It can be a good idea to hang leashes by the door you are planning to evacuate through.
You can be better prepared to keep your pets safe during a fire emergency by following these safety tips.
SERVPRO of Metrocrest Technicians are IICRC-trained and certified, so they can determine what kind of loss you have and how to properly take care of it, so you don’t have any further problems.

How a Home is Restored After a Fire Damage is Important
5/1/2018 (Permalink)
SERVPRO of Metrocrest (972) 233-8400
A house fire and the smoke that is produced after a fire impacts certain parts of a house differently. Because of this it may require different methods of sanitizing, restoring and/or rebuilding. You may not be able to see the extent of the fire damage because sometimes it occurs in areas that are not visible to the naked eye. There could be damage behind walls, in the attic, it could have affected the structure, or electrical or plumbing systems. Even walls or surfaces that aren’t in the same room where the fire originated can be damaged.
Surfaces with smoke and soot damage require special cleaning agents. As common as household cleaning products can be they can be ineffective or even cause additional damage. Commonly used equipment in fire damages

Call SERVPRO of Metrocrest (972) 233-8400 for all your fire Restoration needs.
A significant part of fire cleanup focuses on purifying contaminated air and neutralizing odors caused by smoke. Here at SERVPRO of Metrocrest we use special equipment to help clean and sanitize the air and make a home safe to breathe in again. A HEPA (High- Efficiency Particulate Air) Vaccum, is a high-powered vacuum with filters that trap airborne particles like soot. It can be used on surfaces including ceilings, walls, and floors. We also use Air Scrubbers. An Air Scrubber helps to eliminate odors and clean the air by using a filtration system to suck air in and filter it before releasing it back into the house. An Ozone Machine is another piece of equipment that is used during a fire cleanup. The Ozone Machine neutralizes odors and should only be used after a house is cleaned, emptied of all contents and vacated. The machine is typically used for a couple of days and the home must be ventilated for an additional 24 hours before reentry.

SERVPRO of Metrocrest Offers Remediation Services Regardless if the Fire Damage is Large or Small

SERVPRO of Metrocrest (972) 233-8400
It is never a pleasant experience when a fire starts inside your Dallas home. Fires not only threaten the safety of you and your family but are costly to repair as well. The heat, flames, and smoke produced by a fire causes extensive damage to your home.
Whether the fire is small or large, it is a smart move to let the professionals come in and assess the situation. SERVPRO of Metrocrest is IICRC certified and have experience with different types of scenarios.
Both the heat and smoke created by a blaze cause several types of damage to your home. Flames burn content and building materials inside the home. Smoke spreads throughout the structure leaving behind soot and foul odors. Our professional crews at SERVPRO of Metrocrest get taught how to mitigate fire damage by putting each case into a category based on the severity of the damage.
In fire damage situations, there are three main types of severity. Putting each damage scenario into a certain level of severity helps our specialists know what types of methods to use when mitigating the problem. The three levels are minor, medium and major fire damage.
In minor fire damage situations, smoke residues only affect individual rooms of the structure that are near the source. The amount of soot left behind from the smoke is minimal. Very few areas get re-painted, and only some minor items get replaced. Most of the mitigation process involves wet and dry cleaning of the ceiling, walls, and other surfaces.
In medium fire damage cases, the amount of smoke residues is moderate, and more areas need wet cleaning. The areas that need to be re-painted and items that require replacement increase. Most of the time with medium fire damage contents inside the home get cleaned on site, but there is heat damage to building materials.
In major fire damage scenarios, there is a lot of heat and flame damage at the fire's source, and structural charring is even possible. In these cases, emergency procedures such as boarding up the exterior of the building and detailed cleaning of the structure possibly takes place. The building gets filled with smoke damage and foul odors, and usually, our crews must pack out the house and clean the contents offsite.
No matter how severe the damage in your home is, hiring professionals always gets you the best results. SERVPRO of Metrocrest can be reached at (972) 233-8400, and we are available 24 hours a day and seven days a week to help you.
Home Fire Safety Tips For The North Dallas Winter Season
12/29/2017 (Permalink)
Winter is the most wonderful time of the year. However, winter is also the most dangerous times of the year for home fires, as half of all home heating fires occur in December, January, and February. Before you turn up the heat to stay cozy and warm, read over our list of essential winter fire safety tips to keep you and your home safe this winter.
Space Heaters
Heating is the second leading cause of all U.S. home fires, and space heaters are the type of equipment most involved in these fires. Space heaters and other heat-producing appliances should never be left on or plugged in when no one is home, and only one appliance should be plugged into an electrical outlet at a time. Keep anything that can be burned at least three feet away from all heat sources, including fireplaces, wood stoves, radiators, as well as space heaters.
Carbon Monoxide
Carbon monoxide is called “the invisible killer” for a good reason, as the odorless and colorless gas is extremely hazardous and more common in the winter than any other time of year. The poisonous gas is created when fuels like gasoline, wood, coal, or propane do not burn. Heating and cooking equipment can be potential sources of carbon monoxide, and every home should take the necessary precautions against the invisible gas. Be sure to have a carbon monoxide detector in your home and test the alarm at least once a month- and of course, have fire alarms throughout your home and test those often as well.
Generators
While generators are useful during power outages caused by winter storms, improper use of them can be very dangerous. Portable generators can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning, electrical shock, or a fire hazard if misused. Your portable generator should be kept outside- as far away from your home as possible- and away from any windows, doors, and vent opening. Also, turn off the generator and let it cool down before refueling- never refuel while it is running.
Chimneys And Vents
A qualified professional should be cleaning and inspecting your chimney and vents every year before you start lighting your fireplace. Be sure to use dry, seasoned wood when lighting your fire to produce more flame and less smoke. Also, store your cooled ashes in a tightly covered metal container, placed outside at least ten feet from your home and neighboring buildings.
SERVPRO of Metrocrest responds quickly offering a full line of fire cleanup and restoration services to help you return home as soon as possible. Before risking further damage by attempting to clean up the damage yourself, call the fire damage clean up and restoration professionals at (972) 233-8400.
Tips on how to keep your business fire-hazard free during the holiday season
12/28/2017 (Permalink)
If you run a business in the North Dallas, Tx area, you may get at least a few days off this month for the holiday season. While December is known as a time for joy and happiness, the winter season unfortunately also comes with an increased risk of fire. Before you leave your building unoccupied for a few days, be sure to take a few extra steps to ensure your business is safe and fire-hazard free so that you can enjoy the holidays!
Unplug Electronics
Electrical fires are a common cause of fire events in business, so if you’ll be closing down your business for a few days or weeks, turn off and unplug as many electronics as possible.
Prevent Freezing Pipes
Winters in Dallas, TX can get very cold, causing untreated pipes to freeze and burst. The pipes are important for your whole building, but the pipes that feed water to your fire sprinkler system are especially vital in protecting your business from a fire. To keep them from freezing or bursting, either keep the internal building at a minimum of 40 degrees or use insulation sleeves for the pipes. If the pipes are not protected from the freezing weather, your sprinkler system will be useless in the event of a fire.
Check All Fire Protection Equipment
Before locking up for the holidays, be sure to check that all fire protection equipment and systems are working properly. Even if you do all you can to prevent fire-hazards, events may happen, and the fire detection system, sprinkler system, and alert systems such as strobe lights and horns must be maintained to protect your building.
SERVPRO of Metrocrest responds quickly offering a full line of fire cleanup and restoration services to help your business get back up and running in no time. Before risking further damage by attempting to clean up the damage yourself, call the fire damage clean up and restoration professionals at SERVPRO of Metrocrest (972) 233-8400.

Different Types of Smoke Damage in North Texas
5/9/2017 (Permalink)
Do You Know the Different Types of Smoke?
There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Metrocrest will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:
Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber
- Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.
Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood
- Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.
Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire
- Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

For Fire Damage Cleanup, Call the professionals at SERVPRO of Metrocrest
5/2/2017 (Permalink)
When the firefighters leave, it may seem like the danger has passed and the home is safe from further destruction, but without professionals to help clean the smoke damage, the building will never return to normal. While the principles behind fire restoration are fairly simple, it requires a lot of experience and manpower to perform adequately, and this means that it shouldn’t be attempted by a homeowner on his or her own. The trained professionals at SERVPRO of Metrocrest should be called on-site immediately. We can clean smoke damage and restore items affected by a fire, but we must be brought to the site as soon as possible to halt the ongoing issues that ash residue can cause. The first thing SERVPRO of Metrocrest’s trained, certified, professional technicians will do when on site is to identify all affected materials and the source of any odors.
The only way to properly clean smoke and fire damage is to be extremely thorough. Ash residue is easily disturbed and can spread through the building with ease, causing nearly everything to need restoration. The experts at SERVPRO of Metrocrest will identify what can and cannot be salvaged, and will remove any built-up ash residue that is coating surfaces. Over time, ash builds up in layers, and may eventually form into a lacquer-like consistency. Once this is done, the restorers will locate the source of the odor, and treat it with specialized detergents that are formulated for neutralizing this kind of odor. Once materials are treated, they may be sealed off to prevent any further odor from permeating the air in the future.

SERVPRO Hydroxyl Generators for Fire Damage in Dallas, TX
5/4/2016 (Permalink)
SERVPRO of Metrocrest is Here When You Need Us, Dallas!
According to the National Fire Protection Association, it is estimated that some 370,000 home fires occur each year, costing close to $7 billion in total property damage. Many of these fires, however, start and are contained in a certain area of a home or business. Even though containment eliminates the necessity for complete demolition and reconstruction, it is still necessary for proper cleaning of soot and smoke in order to restore the property to a pre-loss condition. SERVPRO of Metrocrest is well equipped and trained to perform the cleaning needed after fire and smoke damage your home or business in the greater Dallas, TX area.
Contractors have long relied upon ozone, foggers, masking agents, filters and chemicals for deodorization. But the hydroxyl generator is a new technology that may be preferable to all of these methods in many circumstances and has now become an essential tool for many disaster cleanup contractors.
Hydroxyl Advantages
Unlike ozone, atmospheric hydroxyls are safe for people, animals, plants and all sensitive materials like rubber, plastic, leather, vinyl, electronics, paper and artwork. Contents can be wet while being deodorized without the risk of bleaching. Jobs can be streamlined when the contractor is able to deodorize while drying, cleaning and demoing. Both contents and structure can be treated at the same time, and as conditions permit, certain packout activities can be avoided or substantially reduced. In many cases, residents can stay in their home or businesses and remain open, while avoiding costly business interruption.
Hydroxyl machines have proven to be effective for almost any odor. They are commonly used for treating odors caused by fire and smoke, water losses, mold and VOCs. This technology is regularly deployed on losses ranging from large big box retail and industrial fires to residential Category 2 and 3 water losses. Hydroxyls have also proven to be very effective for odors that are difficult for ozone or other deodorization methods, such as those caused by protein fires, fuel oil, biohazard and sulfur compounds.
Hydroxyl applications are a gentle and safe form of deodorization. As a general rule of thumb, hydroxyls generators cover approximately 1,000 to 1,500 square feet with normal 10 to 15 foot ceilings when treating moderate to severe odors. There are many factors that can affect this, such as the severity of odor, layout of the structure, whether or not contents are on-site, how long you have to complete the job, etc. Some deodorization can be done within only a few hours, but most applications take three to four days. Large industrial hydroxyl generators are also available for very large losses and have been successfully used on losses of several million cubic feet and more.
SERVPRO of Metrocrest is ready for your call when you need Hydroxyl Generators or anything else. We’re here when you need us in Dallas and the surrounding areas at (972) 233-8400.
